Today students on our team listened to a presentation given by Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM). All kindergarten and first grade students were a part of this presentation at various times.
Below is some information about this presentation (taken from the parent-letter sent home earlier this month):
The goals of the
presentation included differentiating good, hurtful and confusing touches, providing
children with skills and language to speak out about abuse, and encouraging
children to ask for help if they are ever feeling hurt or scared.
The classroom presentation in Kindergarten and first grades utilizes puppets to present the material in an entertaining, non-threatening format that encourages discussion and participation. Opportunities are provided for students to actively participate in order to integrate the concepts they have learned. Worksheets for each grade level are completed to identify the trusted adults students feel comfortable talking to if they ever feel hurt or scared. These worksheets are sent home with students on the day of the presentation along with a newsletter with more information for the adults at home.
