Today our class welcomed Andrew Clements to speak to us about what it means to be an author. Last minute, he graciously agreed to allow our entire team to join us as well! What a kind offer considering that moved the presentation from 20 students to 78!
Mr. Clements began by talking with us about authors and what they do. He brought us from writing the very first words of a book onto the page, through multiple drafts, years of working, the process of illustrations all the way through to the printing press and a final published book! The book he used as a tool to support his presentation was his picture book, Big Al.
We are so lucky that he was able to join us!
**Here is a quote from Mr. Clements' website that shares a bit about his philosophy as an author and person. This came through in his presentation to us as well!
Sometimes kids ask how I've been able to write so many books. The answer is simple: one word at a time. Which is a good lesson, I think. You don't have to do everything at once. You don't have to know how every story is going to end. You just have to take that next step, look for that next idea, write that next word. And growing up, it's the same way. We just have to go to that next class, read that next chapter, help that next person. You simply have to do that next good thing, and before you know it, you're living a good life.
