SEMINAR!

Today was our first day of SEMINAR! This is a 30 minute block of time that happens twice per week, where students will visit one of the four first grade teachers on our teaching team to learn about something of their choice. Each teacher is responsible for a different set of lessons, linked to 1-2 standards for first grade students that they are passionate about. Below are the teacher names, our seminar titles, and a brief description of what students will do in each. Once students choose a seminar to attend, they will stay with that teacher for one month. At the end of that month, students will pick the seminar they would like to attend next, and the same process will occur. This is a great opportunity for students to have voice and choice in their learning, and learn from other 1st grade teachers on our team that may have different teaching styles. Ask your child about seminar on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Ms. Menard - It Creeps, It Crawls!
Through informational text, we will learn about snakes, lizards and spiders.

Mrs. Willette - Do You Speak?
Learn words and phrases from around the world! Spanish, French, Italian and more....WOW your friends and family by greeting them in a new language!

Mrs. Carbone - I'm a Poet and I Know It!
You will read, write and enjoy listening to and discussing poetry through seasonal themes, such as apples, pumpkins, Thanksgiving, mittens, and snowmen. We will share our own poetry as authors and build reading fluency. We will also search for clues and use our five senses to form vivid mental images and make meaning of unknown words.

Ms. Demmons - Think Like a Scientist!
You will explore many science topics by participating in hands-on activities/experiments. Group discussions will be an important part of our work as scientists, as we observe, explore, and learn together.
