Shake the Beans - Math Game

Students learned a new math game today to help them practice with combinations of 10. 

0 + 10 = 10

1 + 9 = 10

2 + 8 = 10

3 + 7 = 10

4 + 6 = 10

5 + 5 = 10

'Shake the Beans' is a game that uses plastic "beans" with a white side and a red side. Each partnership receives 10 beans and a cup. The object is to shake the cup, spill the beans, count each color, and write a number sentence like the ones above. In time, students should begin to learn their complements of 10 by memory. They also should notice that some facts are "turn around facts". For example, 2 + 8 is the same as 8 + 2. This game is one way to help support that learning.
