Word Work Centers

Today students had the opportunity to practice some of their high frequency words at four separate centers. This provided students with repeated, hands-on practice spelling and reading their words as they rotated between centers.

Here are some details about each center:

  • Shaving Cream
Students spread out a blob of shaving cream across their tables and used their finger to write each of their words. After writing a word they can spread out the shaving cream a bit more and write again!

  • Salt Words
Students use a q-tip to write their words in a container of salt.

  • Chalkboard and Water
Students write one word at a time on the chalkboard, then dip their finger in water and trace over the word on the board. Then erase and repeat! *This could also be done using a damp                   sponge to trace over the chalk, instead of using a cup of water and a finger.

  • Play Dough
Students use play dough to build their words. They can do this in multiple ways. Many students chose to roll the play dough into pieces, and then used the pieces to form letters. Other students chose to squish the play dough into a flat surface, and imprint their words using their finger. Both methods work!

**Any of these centers could be duplicated at home!
